What are Black Pearls?

Black Pearls, or Tahitian Pearls, are beautiful organic gems created by the ‘Black Lipped’ oyster. Interestingly, they are never true black in colour. Instead, they could be blue, purple, green, brown or silver but they are always very pretty.

Historically used within jewellery and ornaments, the Black Pearl signified prosperity and wealth. However, more modern use sees the precious pearls used in skincare, for their nourishing and anti-ageing properties. So, adding it to your skincare routine could bring real benefits.

Where do Black Pearls Come from?

Black Pearls are primarily cultivated around the stunning islands of French Polynesia, around Tahiti – think deep blue tropical waters, swaying palm trees and pristine white sand. The pearl oyster is a mollusc belonging to the Pteriidae family and the pearls can take 2 to 3 years to form.

sand and sea

Black Pearls form like any other pearl, when a grain of sand, gets stuck inside the oyster’s body, it tries to ease the discomfort by coating the speck in calcium carbonate, which then hardens to form a pearl. The pearl is made up of the same luminous, iridescent substance that the oyster lines the inside of its shell with.

The interior shell of most oysters is white or silver, but the Black-Lipped’s interior has a thick band of black. The closer to the band, the darker the pearl. They vary in colour, depending on where the grain of sand is wedged.

Why should I use Black Pearl in my skincare regime?

Over time, our skin shows the signs of ageing and, thanks to the exposure to free radicals, this process can happen faster than necessary. This is where Black Pearl can help.

The pearls are crushed and micronised to a powder which is then infused into topical skincare products. The benefits of pearl powder, in promoting and maintaining the skin’s youthful appearance, were discovered thousands of years ago. There are reports that date its use back to Ancient Chinese medicine and the Tang Dynasty.

The Science Behind Black Pearl

Pearl Extract is known to increase the skin’s natural glow. This is because it is composed of 18 amino acids which smooth out fine lines and improve skin’s ability to retain moisture. This not only helps prevent dehydration, it increases the suppleness of the skin, making it appear firmer and smoother. It also helps to promote skin’s natural radiance.

The extract also contains Polysaccharides which are a natural component of skin that can retain moisture, help to improve skin elasticity and potentially contain antioxidant properties.

Black Pearl Extract is naturally rich in Calcium, which, again, helps to hydrate the skin. It contains antioxidants which work to protect skin against ageing free radical damage. The benefits don’t stop there with Calcium, it also can help firm, smooth and brighten skin’s appearance.

The extract may help even skin tone by slowing down the production of the enzyme ‘Tyrosinase’ which impacts the development of melanin. Melanin can lead to dark spots and pigmentation on the skin, Black Pearl Extract can help brighten skin’s appearance.
