Collagen: Boost Hydration & turn Back Time on Your Skin

When it comes to anti-ageing, Collagen is King! Using Collagen in your daily skincare routine will nourish and feed dry, dehydrated, and mature skin, to help bring that youthful glow back to where it belongs. There are many different types of Collagen from different sources. Here at SBC, we use marine collagen, which has some wonderful benefits for the skin, so let’s find out more…

About Collagen

Let’s get technical…. Collagen is the main structural protein found in connective tissues in our bodies, comprising about 30% of the body’s total protein content.  Naturally produced by the body, Collagen helps the skin maintain its elasticity, keeping it looking youthful.

We are born with an abundant supply of collagen, as a baby our skin is plump, firm and smooth, thanks to all the collagen. Unfortunately, our body stops producing collagen as early as our mid to late 20s, (therefore it is never too early to add Collagen to your skincare routine).

Around age 30, our collagen production begins declining slightly faster, right around the time those first fine lines and wrinkles appear on our face. After 30, our collagen level drops 1%-2% every year. So, by age 50, we are down 20%-40% collagen. These degrading collagen levels lead to loss of support within the skin, leading to wrinkles, thinning and sagging skin.

How can Collagen help my skin?

Hydrate

Hydrated skin equals happy skin and Collagen protein is known for its occlusive properties. This means it will increase moisture levels in skin by providing a physical barrier to epidermal water loss. Water evaporation will be reduced; therefore skin will stay hydrated for longer, looking brighter with even skin tone. Hydrated skin also plumps out the appearance of fine lines for a more youthful looking complexion. Because of its unique ability to bind water, topical collagen can naturally condition the skin and help maintain moisture levels.

Elasticity

Collagen is important in maintaining the skin’s elasticity. Having supple skin, full of elasticity, will prevent facial wrinkles being formed every time you make an expression, giving that plump and youthful appearance of younger skin. As the collagen breaks down as we age skin’s elasticity is reduced, so using Collagen products will help to boost elasticity, which is the key to a smoother complexion.

Targets Wrinkles

Daily expressions will leave their mark on the skin causing wrinkles and fine lines over time, this added to the inevitable fact of ageing, exposure to the sun and free radical damage; skin does need a helping held. Using Collagen on the skin will help to gradually top up collagen levels temporally, making wrinkles look smaller, and less prominent.

Scar Treatment

As our collagen progressively breaks down, our skin can scar more easily and may appear deeper and more pronounced. Externally applying a product containing Collagen can help scaring heal quicker, minimise the appearance of the scar and improve the skin’s texture surrounding the area.
